I recently got received a MIFI aka Verizon’s version of a wireless card which allows you to connect to the internet through 3g similar to how your cellular phone works. As an avid internet user, I like the idea of being able to be connected anywhere. After looking up many plans similar ro the one my work has me using, I realized how unpractical these devices still are for the following reasons:
Limited Data usually tied to your phone plan. I can use 4 GB on my phone a month can you imagine how much data I could use with a laptop connected?
Still really slow due to phone data signals. Anywhere where it works well you are only blocks from a free WiFi signal. Usually works worse the more you need it.
Costs the same as home internet service, but is slower and massively limited with speed. Its hard to use with worrying about data limits especially if you have multiple on a plan and at least for me it doesn’t seem to be part of my needs.
Is it necessary to be tied in to the internet at all times with a computer for $40-60 or more a month?
Depends on what you do. I used a mifi while driving or at a cabin for vacation where there were no open wifi APs for 20+ miles.
Now my phone can share data so I’ll use that instead.
